ABOUT TODOS SANTOS
Todos Santos Location
Todos Santos sits in the middle of the Baja on the North Pacific coast, around 50 miles north of Cabos San Lucas, 85 miles from the international airport (SJD) in Los Cabos and 48 miles from La Paz (LAP). Find it where the magnificent Sierra Laguna mountains meet the sea. A new toll road leads the way for a smooth ride. The village, now a designated “Magic Town,” means that the flavor, styles and buildings of old are preserved in charming washes of color. The town is clean and festive and a favorite anchor for local artists of note. But history is alive and well here, too, owning to its founding in 1724 as a religious settlement with the Misión Nuestra Señora del Pilar built in 1747. Later it became a thriving town of sugar cane mills when plentiful aquifers were discovered beneath the terra firma. Today, those waters feed the abundant fruit trees and vegetable farms that supply the town’s restaurants with the freshest of foods.
Beaches in Todos Santos
Beaches here seem to go on forever with few people in sight. While the waters are too strong for swimming, they are perfect, if not aggressively sought, for surfers. Several surfing outfitters are on hand to offer one-on-one lessons. Popular beaches here are San Pedrito, Pastora and Cerritos, all located with a short drive of Todos Santos.
Things to do in Todos Santos
Todos Santos has been a magnet for international cultural festivals. Among them is a yearly music event started by former R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck. Then there are writers’ workshops, art fests and studios tours, film festivals, the Gastrovino food and wine festival each May, and a fun Mango Festival in the summer.
wandering and discovery
When not celebrating film, food and culture, Todos Santos is about wandering and discovery. You can visit the mission perched above the town and take a tour. You can visit the bi-lingual Museo de la Casa de Cultura for some precious photo exhibits and relics on display from the past few centuries. And you can visit some cool hotels worth exploring, such as the haunting and ambient Hotel California, where you can check out any time you like. But you can never leave. The town of Todos Santos is as big as a minute, so it is possible to wrap yourself in the local lore and life, shop for notions, take in some sites, and have a delightful dining experience all within a few hours. Suggested activities for longer stays include surfing and, in the fall season, observing hatchling turtles on their trek to the ocean.
